There are still many companies that are still hiring - even in this recession.  Obviously, many will advertise their vacancies through the normal channels (ie online job sites, recruitment agencies and off-line newspapers).  However, a significant proportion will not be advertising and they will fill their vacant positions through recommendations and speculative (sometimes called prospective) job letters if they cannot find one of their own staff suitable.
